SPOTLIGHT WRITER: ALIA

Characters: Jenny Thomas, Anna Wallace, Gina Lutz, Kaida Takadai, Jackson Street, Melody Guthrie and Kitty Pryde

Thread that best shows off your writing: Training? and Jinxed.

Writing strengths? Quick responses with meat (so not just a few words). Digging into characters motivations a bit.

What are you working on as a writer? Making my posts longer, using different words and really trying to find ways of digging in further to the characters psyche.

What were the biggest influences to your writing? Heinlein, Lucas, Herbert, JMS, Whedon.

Favorite X-men storyline/comic/artist/series? Storyline: Reaching way way back is probably the inital Brood one or the original Dark Phoenix. Single issue comic: Uncanny X-Men 303; it was the first one that I ever picked up. Artists: Oh god, The Kurbert brothers (Andy and Adam); Silvestri; Madureira; Cockrim; Byrne; Lee (I keep telling you all I have problems choosing!). Series: Original New Mutants and Generation X. Uncanny comes in third just because it's the original.

What drew you to BMF? KEL! We had a game together that died and I told her I missed gaming with her so she sent me this site.

What is your favorite aspect of BMF? The community. The fact that people work together to create plots and interconnected characters. That ideas aren't just 'no' but willing to be worked with. And the unique application.

Where would you like to see BMF go in the future? Anywhere it can. More plots. More posts. To grow and get bigger and take over the world...

While she'd kept up with Lila Wanda had to admit that training for and with the rest of the Brotherhood in preparation for the Madrid operation had taken up much of her time.

Which left it till now.

Which she had to admit was far far later than she'd wanted to.

“Binary?” Her new wine red leather outfit squeaked as she knocked redundantly on the other woman's door. After all she while didn't understand how the technology worked or the woman's connection to it; she did accept that it existed and conformed her expectations accordingly.

The soft click told her it was open; “I brought lunch?” It wasn't the fist time she'd visited in the last month but she hadn't had time to stay and chat. Hopefully Lila did. She knew it was just as probable that she was busy preparing her own...things, for the mission. And In. That case Wanda would leave the basket and take her leave as she had other times when the girl had been too busy to sit and chat.

Hopefully though she have some time; Wanda had heard some...odd rumors floating around about her and the cyborg.

Her lips twitched in self deprecating humor, she'd learned the term from the many hours of TV Lila had shared with her. She might have only been paying half attention but repeat anything often enough and it would penetrate even her consciousness.

They were all going to Spain. In a way, her own way, Lila was excited about the trip. She had never gong to Spain before, and so this would be all brand new experiences for her. She had taken the time to work on some additional programming for her watch and chair to allow her to translate to and from Spanish quickly. This way she could communicate with people there without forcing them to switch to or even have to learn a different language from their native tongue.

Her drones were all packed in their cases, and would be coming with. Lila was settled into her motorized chair, and was readying her things in the cabin that Magneto had assigned to her while they were on this trip. It was a bit larger than some of the others, because Lila required more room to move about in her chair, and required additional storage space for her drones and machines.

A makeshift chair rested toward the back of the room, for her to use when she needed to have access to the screens and extra computing power of the mainframe computer that she had built for the ship since it was raised from beneath the water.

What Wanda would see was that Lila was once again multitasking, programming a drone while at the same time playing a game of galaga on the screen of her computer. Programming drones was boring work…

So it was with bright eyes that her attention had been turned to the door, the game paused and the programming skimming across the smaller window on the screen. Wanda, welcome. Lunch would be a pleasant break from my current task. I had not noticed the time. The technopath still often lost track of time, and how long it had been since she had last eaten, but she did truthfully add, I am very hungry.

Seeing the small half smile that Wanda had taken, Lila tilted her head, What amuses you, Wanda? I would enjoy being amused as well.

Connor had never been on a ship before, not at sea. Well, that wasn’t necessarily true, now, was it? There was, after all, a very real chance that he had, and he simply didn’t remember it. Therefore, he amended his thought: He had yet to be on a ship at sea in the current incarnation of his life.

These were the sort of thoughts that he was forced to deal with as he worked over the past few days. There had been quite a bit of work to do loading up the ship, and as with any manual labor that the Brotherhood had that needed doing, Connor was at the center of it. After all, while anyone could carry one of the supply boxes onto the ship, he could carry a stack of them at a time easily, and he accepted that his physical capabilities served an important purpose in seeing the tasks handled in a timely manner. It was, though, very mindless work, and his mind was always active, leaving him to travel down trains of thought that he would have rather left unexplored. For example, how many ‘incarnations’ had his life had? It wasn’t out of the question for him to have been wiped in a similar manner several times, or to have had his memories altered at some point. The only reason that he knew that he could trust the memories he was operating on was that coming into his life in the Brotherhood, he’d had none at all. And while he trusted Lila’s skill at making sure it wasn’t done again, it did leave him feeling very… temporary. If a person could be erased with the stroke of a few keys, could they really be said to be a real person?

He was glad when his alert sounded in his head, marking that it was time for him to stop working on his current project and to prepare lunch. Lila often let herself lose track of time, which made it all the more important for him to remember when it was time for her to eat. Today, he found that his internal clocks were once again in a state of chaos, with his systems arguing over what time zone they were currently in in the middle of the ocean. Was he late with lunch? Yes, he was late with lunch. They’d have to patch his software tonight to stop this problem from happening again, because it was becoming extremely irritating for him, but there was nothing for it now. He was heading down to the galley to cook something, a job that took him more concentration and, thankfully, more distraction, when Lila answered his ping and apology with a notice that she did, indeed, have lunch. That made him pause, but the explanation made sense. He was busy, so Wanda had taken up the job in his absence (possibly just coincidentally). Shrugging, Connor continued on his way to the galley (since he really doubted that Wanda had enough food for everyone) and picked up some lunch as well (always enough to share, no sense in Lila feeling left out) from the meal Chef had prepared, a light lunch that would help everyone get accustomed to the food they could expect in Spain.

His follow-up query received a reply that no, Lila didn’t wish him to stay away, so with the food in hand, Connor headed into the cabin they’d been staying in for the trip over. “Good afternoon, Wanda,” he said as he closed the cabin door behind him. “Or, according to conflicting reports by my geosynchronous timekeeping systems, good evening, good night, and good morning. I suppose that we can pick which one is true.” One had to keep a sense of humor about one’s physical failings, he supposed.

“Nothing dear, just my own ignorance amuses me at time.” Her lips twisted in self humor. ‘Better to be amused at how the world flits by me than upset, right?” Not that she hasn't reacted in just that manner over the last few months.

Wanda was setting out the dishes from her basket when Conor appeared baring his own lunch. “Hello Conor and good afternoon to you as well.” Her smile was welcoming, she didn't dislike him, she just didn't particularly like him either. But for Lila’s sake she tried to be friendly...when they were all in the same room.

“How are you this confusing day?” She queried politely.

Her own ignorance? I did not believe that ignorance is something that we should be amused by. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge, and we should strive to correct such things. Is this something I would be able to teach you? You have taught me much, Wanda, it is the least I could do. The offer was a serious, legitimate offer; Wanda had been one of the very few people to bring Lila out of her technological cage and reintroduce her to the world.

Connor’s arrival was met with one of those still small but not quite as tiny smiles that Lila reserved solely for him. It would be afternoon according to local time. Later she would do a diagnostic on his timekeeping systems to make sure that they were properly programmed for long distance travel. Connor shouldn’t have to suffer.

It made Lila happy when all three of them were together, and acting like friends. Oh, she wasn’t a fool; she understood that Wanda and Connor were not as fond of each other as she was as fond of either of them, but they were friendly, and that was good of them. Maybe eventually they would really become friends.

“Then good afternoon, and we’ll call this lunch instead of breakfast or dinner,” Connor answered easily enough. It wasn’t like he was dumb, he knew what time it was, but the faults that he was finding in systems that hadn’t ever been tested for errors still made him chuckle. One time, he’d had an alarm go off in the middle of a very… intimate moment with Lila, warning that his heart rate was abnormal for activities not registered under his physical exertions, which he’d had to joke about afterward. This was no different, so he’d just be amused with being imperfect until Lila patched his software again.

As he always did, he gave Wanda’s query more thought to make sure the answer was correct, rather than just passing along an offhanded ‘fine’ like some people might. “I am finding perspective to be quite an interesting thing,” he finally decided. “Travel is supposed to make the world seem like such a wide, large thing. I can track the motion of the ship to prove this point, even. The visual of traveling on a ship with only water as far as the eye can see makes it seem quite… small, though. Empty, even,” he added. Oh, he didn’t mind the world being small, his favorite people were largely on this ship, but it did present challenges when it came to keeping himself busy.

Wanda bent to kiss her forehead, “my remedied ignorance dear heart, you have done wonders I helping me learn more and more about this world and the words for technology.” The smile Lila gave Connor wasn't missed and while she wasn't sure she completely approved...it wasn't her place to say anything. Not when he made her happy.

Wanda just stared at the man as he said…something, for the absolute life of her she had NO idea what he was saying even after months of happily listening to Lila.

“Yes?” She wasn't sure if she needed to agree but being agreeable usually was nicer than not. “I hope everyone is hungry, since you have two lunches.” She smiled at them both setting out the dishes she'd brought. “How have you two been? Did you have a nice time in Vegas?” She was simply trying to make small talk while they ate.

The flow of affection from her friends had definitely had an impact on Lila. She smiled (such as Lila’s smiles were) more often, and accepted the affection with more grace than she had only a year prior. When Wanda kissed her forehead, Lila gave one of her small smiles and let her eyes close for a moment. I see. That is good, then. I am glad that I have been of assistance to you and your learning, Wanda. The smile that Lila had for Connor was the sort that she only had for Connor.

Good afternoon, Connor. Lunch would, I believe, be entirely appropriate. Yes, she was going to have to run a check on his timekeeping systems. No, perhaps this wasn’t as alarming as other such issues had been in the past, but Lila did not like anything that made the cyborg’s life more difficult. We have several more days at sea before we are to make port in Spain. That we will have that much time left with only the ocean to view makes the world seem far too large for my liking. This was, however, a woman who did not like feeling small, and whose world had, until fairly recently, been a small bay surrounded in screens and computers. Though I will certainly agree with your statement that it is rather empty.

Lila took stock of her own physical hunger and needs when Wanda mentioned having two lunches, and decided that yes, she was very hungry. I am quite hungry. Las Vegas was extremely enjoyable. We were kindly given a very nice suite by one of the hotels we visited, and we only had to agree not to play in their casino anymore. I hope to return soon to further partake of what Las Vegas has to offer. Perhaps next time we will visit one of the many shows they have. Oh, Lila loved Las Vegas. It was likely the most fun she had ever had… Would you like to go next time, Wanda? I am certain if we contacted the hotel they would be happy to provide a room for a friend of ours as well.
