SPOTLIGHT WRITER: ALIA

Characters: Jenny Thomas, Anna Wallace, Gina Lutz, Kaida Takadai, Jackson Street, Melody Guthrie and Kitty Pryde

Thread that best shows off your writing: Training? and Jinxed.

Writing strengths? Quick responses with meat (so not just a few words). Digging into characters motivations a bit.

What are you working on as a writer? Making my posts longer, using different words and really trying to find ways of digging in further to the characters psyche.

What were the biggest influences to your writing? Heinlein, Lucas, Herbert, JMS, Whedon.

Favorite X-men storyline/comic/artist/series? Storyline: Reaching way way back is probably the inital Brood one or the original Dark Phoenix. Single issue comic: Uncanny X-Men 303; it was the first one that I ever picked up. Artists: Oh god, The Kurbert brothers (Andy and Adam); Silvestri; Madureira; Cockrim; Byrne; Lee (I keep telling you all I have problems choosing!). Series: Original New Mutants and Generation X. Uncanny comes in third just because it's the original.

What drew you to BMF? KEL! We had a game together that died and I told her I missed gaming with her so she sent me this site.

What is your favorite aspect of BMF? The community. The fact that people work together to create plots and interconnected characters. That ideas aren't just 'no' but willing to be worked with. And the unique application.

Where would you like to see BMF go in the future? Anywhere it can. More plots. More posts. To grow and get bigger and take over the world...

Paige had been trying to let the past go, and just focus on reconnecting with her older brother. She'd been civil and professional when she interviewed Amara, and when she'd spoken to the woman a couple of times since, to keep her updated on the details, and to see if she'd seen or heard anything that made her think that Kilpatrick had decided to start stalking her again.

She'd been equally polite, if quite a bit more friendly, the times she'd spoken to Sam. They'd chatted, updated each other on their lives, and carefully skated around the topic of Amara. Paige had started to hope that this was because there wasn't anything to say. Things were just going along with Amara until she inevitably got bored or someone else caught her eye or she decided to go back to wherever home was.

Then she'd talked to Joelle, and found out that Amara had taken her little sister out to lunch, and it had seemed pretty clear that Amara at least thought that things were very serious between her and Sam. Then Paige had gotten wind from some of her aunts that Sam was bringing Amara home to meet their mother.

All of which meant that it was time to speak to Sam, and find out what was going on. So she'd invited him to join her for dinner, at a little Italian place near her apartment. The whole thing was making her uneasy, and it would be easier to face him on her home turf.

Paige got to the restaurant first, and was sitting at a table when Sam arrived. When he got there, she stood up, offering a hug. "Sam, its good to see you. You're lookin' well."

Things were working out for Sam. The Kilpatrick mess had put a lot of things into perspective with him and Amara. It had also put things into perspective with him and his family. He knew he needed to make sure those relationships were solid, and that no one was taken for granted. This meant he was calling home a lot more. It meant he was trying to make sure to keep in touch with Jay, and to help Joelle when he could. It meant that even Jeb got a friendly visit from his older brother - whether he liked it or not. Family was important.

It also meant he was working hard with things with the X-Men. He wanted to make sure that the new ones - Winter and Max - were fitting in. He worried about Cassi and Winter, but so far, no dead bodies. That was always a plus. The kids were doing well. The family was doing well. He and Amara were doing exceptionally well.

He had been working hard to make sure his relationship with Paige was building, too. They carefully danced around topics that brought conflict - be in her job, his role as an X-Men, or AMara. Sam had made it known last time that Amara wasn't up for discussion. He was with her. He loved her. And if Paige accepted him, than she needed to accept that. So far, so good. Of course, he was fairly certain she would lose her mind when she find out he was going to formally propose, but a huge part of him also hoped that Paige would just....be happy for him. Understand this was his choice. The woman he wanted to marry. To have a family with. To spend the rest of his life with. Ma seemed to think that Paige had no business judging, but otherwise kept out of it.

When Paige invited him to dinner, he happily accepted. He had taken so many steps to surprise Amara with the trip back home. He'd spoken with Ma, and he'd rented a car (much to Ma's upset), and he'd made important reservations. That weekend was an important weekend to him, and it consumed anything that wasn't school or family. Paige, however, was family.

He walked into the restaurant on time, and immediately found his sister. Sam's eyes lit up as he saw her, and he walked over, embracing her. "Hey you, Paigey...how is yas.....How'd th' case go th' other day?" Sam took a seat with a smile, picking the menu up. He was blissfully unaware Paige was...unhappy with him - instead returning to the conversation about the case she had when last they spoke a few days ago.

Paige had been totally willing to just avoid the subject of Amara when it looked like she was just Sam's flavor of the month. But now that Sam was apparently planning on settling down with the woman? Maybe even marry her, have children with her. Introduce her to their Mama? No, that wasn't something that she could just let happen. She had to at least try to talk some sense into Sam.

But she also knew that she had to be careful about it. Going on the attack would just make him defensive. Instead, she'd emphasize the fact that she was worried about him, and that she didn't believe that he and Amara were well suited. Which had the advantage of being true, even if it was also good tactics.

She hugged her brother back, for a moment just glad to have a little bit of the old closeness back "Its still goin' on." Paige replied "We're still workin' on it, but so far we've got a whole lot of leads, but nothin' is really pannin' out. Ah'm sure we'll catch him, but...Ah wish Ah had better news for ya but there it is. Ah know it was hard for ya, with Amara bein' taken and all that."

It was a quick choice for food, and the menu was placed down. He was still more than a little overwhelmed with all the Kilpatrick and the Amara things, but his sister had reached out - and he wanted to have that relationship. He knew they would never see eye to eye. She didn't understand his choice, and Sam couldn't really see her staying with the company that had murdered so many children. It was...a tough pill to swallow, but he was trying.

Still.. this was a great start. She was hugging him, and she was smiling. They were sitting down to eat together- it was almost like old times. For a brief moment, he thought maybe they could repair their relationship, get it back to where it was before...everything. Who knew. Sam was trying to be an optimist, so maybe this was his chance to be optimistic.

He needed, listening to her report on the Kilpatrick situation. Wrinkling his nose, he nodded, understanding. How many times had the X-Men gone after some bad guy, only to have to work harder at finding him that to retrieve and capture him. He supposed that was to be expected. "Ah'm sorry. Ah know that has tah be a thorn in yas side. At least there haven't been any more reported attacked. Can we maybe take that as a good sign? Or does that mean he might have left th' city....." He wasn't fishing for information, but rather trying to make conversation.

"Other than that, how's life? How's th' boyfriend? Are yas still paired with th' Director? How is that working?" Yes, he was trying. He was reaching out, asking about her job, trying to bridge that gap. Only time would tell how effective that would be...

It was nice, sitting down with Sam. For a long time, she'd been afraid that she would never reconcile with her family. Now, she was back on speaking terms with Jay and Sam, and was getting to know Joelle again. It was a welcome change, and part of her didn't want to shatter the fragile truce that existed between herself and Sam. But Paige had never shied away from doing her duty, and she couldn't just stand by and watch her brother do something that was going to end up with his heart broken. Not to mention how much it would hurt their Mama to see Sam's life ruined. Not to mention that it was likely that there would be children involved. So, she was going to have to say something.

"We don't think he left the city." Paige replied "At least there hasn't been any sign that he's set up shop somewhere else. An' we don't think that he's the sort who is goin' ta stop. He's....organized, and calculating, but that doesn't mean that he's sane, and that kind of crazy doesn't stop. Not until they're locked up or put down." Paige wasn't feeling optimistic about Kilpatrick, but she was also determined to catch Kilpatrick, no matter what it took.

"Ah'm still Pete's right hand, although now that he's director, its more like bein' his aide-de-camp than his partner." Paige said, forbearing to mention that Pete tended to call her 'the plucky lass who helps me solve crimes', a description that pleased and discomfited her in equal measure "Things are goin' well with Jackson as well. We're talkin' about movin' in together, once mah lease is up, an' maybe takin' a trip so Ah can meet his Mama, once things calm down a bit." she wanted Jackson to meet her mother, but that was more complicated "Speakin' of such, when Ah talked ta Joelle th' other day, she mentioned that you were goin' ta be takin' Amara home ta meet Mama an' the little ones."

Sam took the tea brought for him with a smile and a polite thank you. His accent was pronounced, but he was relaxed, hopeful. Things were...being juggled in his life, but he was happy with which items he was juggling. There was hope in the eldest Guthrie. His siblings all had very distinct personalities, but they were all talking. That was what was most important. And in this case? Paige was reaching out to him. That was, honestly? a first since he'd been back. He'd take the victory.

They started with the safe topics. Work. For her, UPC. For Sam, X-Men. Yes, he was the leader of a rogue group of mutants - most of whom weren't registered, but hey. Families were complicated. He frowned a bit when Paige admitted they had no leads on the man who'd kidnapped his girlfriend and used an ex-girlfriend to torture her. That was....not a happy thought. It was good to keep up to date, though. "Thanks for letting me know...Ah'm working on keeping 'Mara covered at all times....and ah know Ryan's been watching Rose." Yeah, there was more than a little bitterness in her name. Others had moved past her actions; he could not. Not yet. He was praying, though.

But it seemed his sister's life was going well, and he offered earnestly, "Ah'm glad for yas. Ah've never met Pete, but ah know he'n Kitten had more than a few words and she wasn't as friendly as you seem tah make him. He helped get Logan back, so..that's a plus in my book...and when do ah get tah meet Jackson? " He really did look happy for her.

And then the punchline came.

Sam inwardly sighed. He should have known it wasn't going to be that simple. He should have realized that Paige wouldn't call him out of the blue to have lunch without some sort of ulterior motive - and it looked like his visit home was the reason. Sam wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, though. Maybe he was judging her too harshly. Maybe he was jumping to conclusions.

Nodding quietly, he said, "Yeah, ah am. Tis a surprise for 'Mara. She'd get so caught up in th' gifts and ritual, she'd...well, this way is better. " He waited a pause before he admitted to Paige, "We're gonna get married, Paige. Ah want tah spend th' rest of mah life with her. If anything, Kilpatrick helped tah prove that...." He waited, knowing there would be the inevitable blow up...
